上杉氏の定義では、ジャーナリストとは「意見を発信する人」ではなく「取材をした事実のみを発信する人」。つまり、ジャーナリストでなくなれば、取材していないことも「個人的な意見」として発言できることになる。
「ジャーナリストは休業するって言ったけど、ジャーナリスト以外は休業するって言ってないから、これからは取材をしてないことでもバンバン発信しようと思ってるんだ。ジャーナリストを名乗らなければもっと過激な意見も言えるからね」（上杉氏）
上杉氏は、権力と戦うことを放棄したわけではなく、むしろ今までより過激に意見を発信するため、あえて「ジャーナリスト」という肩書きを捨てたということ。“ジャーナリスト魂”はまだまだ健在だ。
